Experience 01 — Live experiment

Nord

A quiet menswear storyfront. Ask for what you need — the store composes itself around your answer.

Nord is the first public storyfront: a fictional Scandinavian menswear brand with a small, considered range — wool overcoats, natural-fiber knitwear, welted leather boots. There are no menus and no category pages. You say what you're dressing for, and Nord assembles a store around it.

The Nord storyfront: a wool overcoat on a stand in a dim room, the headline 'Fewer, better things.' and a conversation field where you ask the store for what you need.

What Nord is

Nord is a fictional brand we built so we could test the storyfront idea in public without putting a real merchant's reputation on the line. It sells the kind of things that deserve storytelling: wool overcoats made for cold coastal light, natural-fiber knitwear, welted leather boots designed to outlive trends.

The range is deliberately small. A storyfront isn't about surfacing ten thousand products faster — it's about understanding what you're trying to do and showing you the few things that actually answer it, along with the story of why they're made the way they are.

What went into making it

The biggest shift wasn't the interface — it was the content. A normal product catalog gives you a title, a price, four photos, and a bullet list. That's not enough raw material to tell a story with. So Nord's catalog is built from fragments: the brand's point of view, the material choices, the moments each piece is made for. The storyfront composes those fragments live, in response to what you say.

The interface streams in progressively rather than loading as one page, because the feeling of conversation depends on the store responding while you're still thinking. And every layout Nord produces is assembled in the moment — which means no two visits look the same, by design.

The honest parts

Nord is an experiment, and it behaves like one. Sometimes it's slower than a static page. Sometimes it composes something a little strange. We're sharing it at this stage on purpose — the hard parts (latency, coherence, staying grounded in the real catalog) are exactly the things worth showing, and your reactions tell us what to fix next.

There is no real checkout and no real orders. Nothing you do in Nord buys anything — it exists so you can feel what conversational commerce is like when the answer isn't a wall of chat text.

Things to try saying

Talk to Nord the way you'd talk to a good store associate — intent, not keywords.

  • I need a coat that can handle cold coastal walks.
  • I'm rebuilding my wardrobe around fewer, better things.
  • What should I wear to feel put together without trying too hard?
  • Show me something that will last ten winters.

Questions about Nord

Is Nord a real store?
No. Nord is a fictional menswear brand created as the first public storyfront demo. The products, the brand, and the prices are all part of the experiment — there is no real checkout and no orders are placed.
What should I say to Nord?
Talk to it the way you'd talk to a good store associate: describe what you're trying to do, not a product name. For example, 'I need a coat that can handle cold coastal walks' or 'I'm rebuilding my wardrobe around fewer, better things.' The store composes itself around your answer.
Why does Nord sometimes respond slowly or oddly?
Nord assembles its interface live, in the moment, from the brand's story fragments and catalog. That's genuinely hard — latency and coherence are the current frontier of the work — and we're sharing the experiment early instead of waiting until it's polished. Expect occasional weirdness.
